... Germany's army and air force were broken on the Eastern Front's titanic battles. The numbers speak for themselves. The Soviets destroyed 75-80% of all German divisions -- 4 million soldiers -- and most of the Luftwaffe. Russia lost at least 14 million soldiers and a similar number of civilians. The Red Army destroyed 507 Axis divisions. On the Western Front after D-Day, the Allies destroyed 176 badly under-strength German divisions ... World War II was not a good and evil struggle between "western democracies" and "totalitarian powers," as we are still wrongly taught.

A revisionist theme seems to have settled on this year's 65th anniversary commemoration of the Normandy landings. The tone was set in Antony's Beevor's new book, D-Day, which tries to debunk certain received ideas about the Allied campaign. Far from being an unmitigated success, Mr Beevor found, the landings came very close to going horribly wrong. And far from being universally welcomed as liberators, many troops had a distinctly surly reception from the people of Normandy.

Those of us who are critical of the power of the Israel Lobby have been intrigued by the fact that the Obama administration seems to be standing up to the Israelis -- and, by implication, to the Israel Lobby ... Any attempt to rein in the settlements or make a meaningful withdrawal from the West Bank and East Jerusalem or allow a viable Palestinian state would produce a civil war among Israelis. But it's also quite clear that there is no political will in Israel for supporting such policies ... One can talk about U.S. interests or Israeli interests all one wants, but this is a fight to the finish. I'm not sure that Obama realizes what he's getting into.

BNP [British National Party] leader Nick Griffin has been elected to the European Parliament as the party won its first two seats. Mr Griffin was elected for the North West region while Andrew Brons picked up another BNP seat in Yorkshire and Humber, where it won 10% of the vote. Mr Griffin said the BNP was not racist, but won votes because it "spoke openly about the problem of immigration."

GM's bankruptcy and Obama's shortsighted response exemplify the self-destruction of our country's economy over my lifetime. Before I retired as a teacher, I warned my students about several dangerous economic trends that have accelerated over the last two decades. The United States has degenerated from a world power based on industrial production to an overextended military empire based on debt and consumption. Our citizens have gone from well-paid industrial workers with comfortable savings accounts to cash-starved consumers with staggering credit card payments.

A new spate of Holocaust films are finally letting Jews have their revenge. This comes after decades of Hollywood's preferred Holocaust, in which Jews diligently parade to their deaths and evil Nazis escape to Canada. But lately, a handful of filmmakers are imagining a new ending. And this time, it's the Nazis who are in danger. The only problem is, the world is so accustomed to Jewish victimhood it's not sure how to receive this new fantasy ... Rewriting history is no small feat. But the idea of a retroactive Jewish fantasy in which Nazis pay for their crimes is certainly welcome entertainment. After all, Hollywood itself was created by Jews who wanted to escape their pasts and live a better future.

Couldn't hurt, on any day, given some worrisome trends in Canada -- though less here than in Europe -- to demonize both Jews and Israel, particularly via the rubric of anti-Zionism, which anybody with half a brain recognizes for what it is: The same old anti-Semitism tarted up in sleazy pedantic finery. But yesterday, at the Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda synagogue in North York, the most astonishing thing happened. Leaders of Canada's political parties got all gushy and goopy, practically falling over one another to show they love Jews -- and Israel -- best.

Multiracial Americans have become the fastest growing demographic group, wielding an impact on minority growth that challenges traditional notions of race. The number of multiracial people rose 3.4 percent last year to about 5.2 million, according to the latest census estimates. First given the option in 2000, Americans who check more than one box for race on census surveys have jumped by 33 percent and now make up 5 percent of the minority population -- with millions more believed to be uncounted.
